Permanent Makeup Healing Process: What to Expect Day by Day
Before We Begin…
So you’ve booked your permanent makeup (PMU) appointment (or you’re thinking about it) — and now you’re wondering, “What happens after?”
Whether you’re getting powder brows, nano strokes, lip blush, or eyeliner tattoo, understanding the healing process will help you feel confident, prepared, and excited for your beautiful results.
I’m Gigi, certified PMU artist at Gigi Beauty PMU, and I’ve guided hundreds of clients through this journey. This post will walk you through the healing process day by day so you’ll know exactly what to expect.
Day 1 – Fresh & Bold
Your PMU will look more defined and darker than your final result. This is normal!
Brows may appear thicker
Lips will look brighter or more intense
Eyeliner will seem more prominent
Tip: Gently blot with a clean tissue if lymph fluid appears, and follow the aftercare instructions I provide.
Days 2–4 – Slight Swelling & Darker Color
The area may feel a little tight or tender. The pigment can temporarily appear even darker as the skin forms a protective layer.
Avoid touching, scratching, or applying makeup over the treated area.
Keep the skin clean and moisturized with the ointment I recommend.
Days 5–7 – Peeling & Flaking
This is the stage where many clients get nervous — the pigment starts flaking or peeling, and it may look patchy.
Don’t panic! This is completely normal.
Do not pick at the flakes (this can pull out pigment).
Continue gentle aftercare.
Days 8–14 – Lighter & Softer Look
Once peeling finishes, your PMU may appear much lighter — sometimes up to 50% lighter than Day 1.
This is part of the skin’s natural healing cycle. Over the next few weeks, the pigment will “bloom” back into the skin.
Weeks 3–4 – Color Settling
The pigment gradually evens out and becomes more natural.
At this stage, you’ll see your true healed results, but remember — most clients still need a touch-up appointment for the perfect finish.
Touch-Up Appointment – Perfecting the Look
Around 6–8 weeks after your initial session, we’ll do your touch-up.
This is where we:
Fill in any light spots
Adjust shape, symmetry, or color intensity
Ensure long-lasting, beautiful results
Tips for a Smooth Healing Process
Follow aftercare exactly — the healing process is 50% the artist’s skill and 50% your aftercare.
Avoid sweating, swimming, and direct sunlight for at least 10 days.
Don’t apply makeup to the treated area until it’s fully healed.
Stay patient — great results are worth the wait!
